General Course Description:
Gambling is often referred to as the hidden addiction. You could be speaking to your neighbor, friend, relative, and never know that they were a suffering from gambling addiction. There would be no telltale behavior, smell, or white powder under the nose to alert you that this person was coping with a serious addiction. Likewise, the gambler may enter into recreational gambling without realizing that he is traveling into a perfect storm leading to personal and financial devastation.
This introductory course provides a through overview of pathological gambling as an impulse control disorder. Criteria for diagnosis are provided and reviewed, methods for assessment are presented, and a stages of gambling model is offered and discussed. Co-morbid disorders commonly associated with pathological gambling are examined. Psychotherapy considerations, and treatment strategies are presented to aid the therapist in working with clients struggling with a gambling addiction.
